TASK DEFINITION

1.What’s the TASK?

Review the Assignment Sheet and enter dates in your agenda. Ask Questions if you don’t know what you need to do.

2.  What Type of Information do I Need?

Determine your project and what you will need to research.  Try to list questions that will guide your research so that you will know what to find.  Does your questions and research topic match the type of experiment that you will be doing?

 

USE OF INFORMATION

1.How can I best use each source?

Match the information to your questions. Do you generate new questions. What type of information is available – charts, maps, diagrams, graphs, pictures?

INFORMATION SEEKING STRATEGIES

1.What are the possible sources?

You need to find everything is available. Try some search strategies – in the library, on the Internet,

Infotrac and databases, community resources, and don't forget people and businesses.

2.Which are the best?

Use the parts of the book – table of contents and index.  Is the information appropriate?  Website evaluations help you sort trash from treasure. Which ones are actually available to you and are easy for you to use? Circle these. If there are some that you need help using, ask your teacher, librarian, mom or dad. List the resources you are going to find and use.

SYNTHESIS

1.How can I organize my information?

Based on your research - make a plan for your report, and display for the science fair.  THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Write a rough draft
• Create an outline
• Create a storyboard
• Make a sketch

 

 

2.How can I present the results?

What formats can I use to display my information?  Decide which pieces of information you will use and how:  graph, chart, diagram, map, info card, photos, real objects, etc. 

 

LOCATION AND ACCESS

1.Where is it?

Can you use the Dewey Decimal System?  Do you know how to read the Search Computers in the library?  How are you going to Search the Internet?

As you locate appropriate information keep track of your sources - start your BIBLIOGRAPHY list.

It is very frustrating to not be able to get back to that GREAT site you had found the other day.

2.How can I do things better?

Reflect on each part of the process and decide how to improve your research skills.  Can you improve internet searching, idea development, making jot notes, creating an effective display?
What did you learn that you can use again? How will you use the skill(s) again? What did you do well this time? What would you do differently next time? What information sources did you find useful? You may be able to use them again
